🎯 The Goal
Encourage meaningful behaviour change through one focused challenge:
60 minutes of moderate-to-intense physical activity (METs ≥ 3) each day for 30 days.
The goal was aligned with World Health Organisation guidelines, which recommend 75–150 minutes of intense activity weekly. The challenge needed to be inclusive, measurable, and motivating — reflecting Thrive’s performance-first mindset.

💡 The Solution: Kiwi’s Power Hour Challenge
Kiwi launched the Power Hour Challenge — a 30-day initiative encouraging employees to complete 60 minutes of intense activity daily. Activities needed to hit METs ≥ 3, which includes things like brisk walking, cycling, or running — any movement that significantly raises heart rate and energy expenditure.
Tracking was seamless and inclusive:
Employees could use their phones, wearables, or both
Kiwi applied science-backed data cleaning and standardisation to ensure fairness across 100+ health data integrations — no matter what device people used
The challenge worked whether someone had an Apple Watch, Fitbit, or just carried their phone
To keep things fun and engaging, employees had access to a live leaderboard — and the person with the most intense minutes at the end won a prize. This healthy competition created social accountability that drove participation and consistency.

All improvements were statistically significant, meaning they reflected genuine behaviour change — not just a temporary lift.

Participants who added 1,000+ steps per day — as part of their intense activity — also saw measurable improvements in mental health. This mirrors published research showing that every extra 1,000 steps per day correlates with a reduction in DASS21 scores — a validated measure of depression, anxiety, and stress.
This means: A simple change in behaviour contributed to a meaningful reduction in psychological distress — helping Thrive employees feel more focused, resilient, and energised.
